About Whānau Rugby Academy
Whānau Rugby Academy was created with a simple purpose: to use rugby as a vehicle for developing people, strengthening communities, and creating opportunities for young athletes. Our focus extends beyond what happens on the field. We believe rugby can help build discipline, confidence, leadership, teamwork, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging.
The word “Whānau” reflects the spirit at the heart of the Academy — family, connection, and collective responsibility. We want every player who becomes part of Whānau to feel that they belong to something greater than themselves and that their development as a person is just as important as their development as an athlete.
Our goal is to provide young rugby players with access to quality coaching, meaningful competition, and opportunities to experience rugby beyond their immediate environment. Through training, tours, tournaments, international relationships, and partnerships with clubs and sporting organizations, we aim to expose our athletes to higher standards of competition while helping them grow both on and off the field.
Whānau also has a broader ambition: to contribute meaningfully to the development of rugby in Trinidad & Tobago and throughout the region. That means supporting not only players, but also coaches, referees, administrators, volunteers, and the wider rugby community. Initiatives such as international tours and the Trinidad Invitational Rugby Sevens Tournament (TIRST) form part of that vision by creating opportunities for local and international rugby communities to compete, collaborate, and build lasting relationships.
Ultimately, our ambition is to build an Academy that opens doors for young people, develops future leaders, strengthens the rugby community, and creates pathways for our athletes to pursue opportunities locally, regionally, and internationally.
